UIJEONGBU INTERPRETATION CENTER

Location

Seoul, South Korea

Year

Programme

2020

Interpretation center

Type

New work

The project is in the center of Seoul in front of the Gyeongbokgung palace and it is designed following five strategies:

  1. The main square of the historical complex is used as the central space and the access area. That space comes back to life working with its level and the pavement.

  2. The remains of the different buildings that have overlapped on the site throughout history are left as scars at the pavement level.

  3. A pure volume is strategically located in the site above the remains, protecting them.

  4. Openings are made pointing to significant parts of the site and its surroundings.

  5. A path is planned, incorporating a sequence of spots that will alternate between direct observation and rooms with the presentation and explanation of the site.

The result is a building which will be a tool for interpreting the site; the very project becomes a means for visitors to understand and interpret the historical remains.
